The Philippine Sports Commission, the City of Manila and SM Prime Holdings have signed an agreement to redevelop the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, a venue that has stood for more than nine decades. The plan aims to modernize the facilities while preserving the site’s heritage.
The project includes plans for a public plaza, an elevated walkway linking the complex to nearby areas, and other improvements meant to turn the grounds into a modern sports and lifestyle destination. The partners want the work done in time for a regional youth games the country is set to host.
Rizal Memorial has long been a landmark for Philippine sports, hosting events and athletes across generations. Balancing modernization with preservation is a central theme of the redevelopment, given the site’s historical value.
Bringing together a national sports body, a city government and a large property developer reflects a growing use of partnerships to fund and manage major public projects. Each partner contributes resources and expertise to the effort.
Officials said the upgraded complex would serve both competitive sports and everyday public use, giving residents a renewed space in the heart of the city.
Work is expected to move ahead with the goal of completing key parts before the country welcomes athletes for the regional games.
