MANILA — A Philippine Navy personnel sustained a head injury after being struck with a wooden baton by China Coast Guard personnel during a confrontation at Ayungin Shoal in the West Philippine Sea on Monday, July 20, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said.
Footage released by the AFP showed China Coast Guard personnel aboard a rigid hull inflatable boat aggressively striking Philippine Navy personnel aboard a rubber boat with wooden batons during the encounter at Ayungin Shoal.
According to the AFP, the injured sailor was immediately given medical attention, and the military is coordinating with BRP Sierra Madre to determine whether the injuries warrant a medical evacuation.
The Department of National Defense has condemned the China Coast Guard’s actions against the Philippine Navy personnel stationed aboard the BRP Sierra Madre at Ayungin Shoal.
