The actor Niño Muhlach has said he fell asleep at the wheel, causing a road accident in Antipolo City that injured one person and damaged several establishments, and he has taken full responsibility for it.
In an official statement on Monday, Muhlach clarified that earlier reports blaming a possible mechanical failure had come from a preliminary police account, not from him. He said he had been driving himself on Sunday, August 23, because his regular driver was on a scheduled day off, and that he fell asleep after a stretch he described as an extremely demanding and exhausting schedule.
He did not offer that as an excuse. Fatigue was “no excuse,” he said, adding that he was taking full personal and legal responsibility for what happened.
The admission is notable mainly for how directly it was made. Public figures involved in accidents often let an ambiguous initial account stand, and correcting the record to accept blame is not the default move. By naming fatigue as the cause and rejecting it as a justification, Muhlach closed off the softer explanation that had briefly circulated.
There is a wider point buried in it, too. Drowsy driving is easy to underestimate and hard to police, and it tends to catch people precisely when they are overworked and think they can push through one more trip. One person was hurt in this case; the outcome could have been worse.
