MANILA — The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is set to award critical contract packages for the long-planned Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge, though construction is expected to extend beyond President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s term, DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon said Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Dizon said the government would soon announce major developments for the flagship infrastructure project, which aims to connect the provinces of Bataan and Cavite across Manila Bay. He said the award of packages covering the Manila Bay portion of the project was imminent, expressing enthusiasm over the milestone.
According to Dizon, some portions of the project are already underway, while the government prepares to award the remaining key packages. He said an official announcement on this front would be coming soon.
Despite this progress, Dizon acknowledged that the bridge’s complexity means it won’t be completed during the current administration. He described the project as inherently complicated and long in the making, but said the impact once finished would bring major relief and a significant boost to the economy.
Asked whether the project could be completed before Marcos leaves office in 2028, Dizon said definitively that it would not be finished within the current term, but expressed hope that it could be completed within the term of the next president.
The Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge is one of the Marcos administration’s flagship infrastructure projects. Once completed, it is expected to span Manila Bay and significantly cut travel time between Central Luzon and Calabarzon.
