There is a neat symmetry to naming a road after John Gokongwei Jr. The man built one of the Philippines’ great business empires, and the story always started with movement, a teenager on a bicycle selling goods to keep his family afloat. This week, that story got a permanent marker: a one-kilometre thoroughfare in Metro Manila now bears his name.
Robinsons Land Corp., the property arm of the group he founded, renamed Bridgetowne Avenue as John Gokongwei Jr. Boulevard. The road runs through the Bridgetowne Destination Estate that straddles Quezon City and Pasig. The ceremony took place on 5 August, timed to what would have been Gokongwei’s 100th birthday on 11 August, and it landed in the same year Robinsons Land marks its 46th anniversary.
The life it honours is the stuff of Philippine business legend. Gokongwei’s great-grandfather, Pedro Gotiaco, had been a wealthy 19th-century businessman, but that cushion was gone by the time John was young. He lost his father at 13 and became the family breadwinner, peddling goods on a bicycle in Cebu. From there, with his brothers, he built a conglomerate spanning property development, aviation and food manufacturing, and pushed it into regional markets across the region.
The family turned out in force. His son Lance Gokongwei, his five daughters, Robina, Lisa, Marcia, Hope and Faith, and grandson Justin Gokongwei-Pe were there to represent him. Lance and his siblings, worth a combined $1.9 billion, still sit among the country’s wealthiest, a reminder that the empire the bicycle started is very much intact.
Renaming a street is a small gesture next to an airline or a shopping-mall network, but it is a telling one. Companies fade, rebrand and get sold. A boulevard that thousands of people drive down every day keeps a name in circulation in a way a balance sheet never could. For a man who spent his life building things meant to outlast him, that is probably the point.
