The same artificial intelligence selling productivity to boardrooms is quietly handing a gift to their attackers. Security researchers warned this week that cyberattacks are getting dramatically faster as AI helps hackers scale, compressing what once took days of manual effort into automated campaigns that unfold in minutes.
The mechanics are unglamorous but effective. Generative tools can churn out convincing phishing messages in flawless local languages, probe systems for weaknesses at machine speed, and adapt on the fly when a defence holds. What used to require a skilled operator now requires a prompt, lowering the barrier to entry for criminals and widening the field of who can cause damage.
For businesses in the Philippines, where digital adoption has raced ahead of security budgets, the asymmetry is uncomfortable. Defenders must be right every time; attackers need to be right once, and they now have tireless assistants. Small and mid-sized firms, often without dedicated security teams, sit squarely in the blast radius.
The counter, inevitably, is more AI: automated monitoring, anomaly detection and response systems that match the attackers’ speed. The result is an escalating arms race in which both sides deploy the same weapon, and the winners are whoever adapts fastest. In cybersecurity, as in much of the economy, AI has not changed the game so much as accelerated it beyond human pace.
